AMAR
AMAR is an organization that defends the rights of children in the slums (called favelas) and those living on the streets. AMAR has several projects and centers, spread over the city of Rio de Janeiro and its suburbs.
AMAR works on three lines;
- emergency relief, as in São Christóvão with the streetchildren
- preventive help, such as in Casa Dom Helder (Grajáu) and Duque de Caxias, for children from the favelas
- formative support, such as Pão com Banana (Grajáu), cooking and serving course.
Children in Brazil go to school for five half days per week. The other time the preventive projects from AMAR catch the youth from the favelas. AMAR helps them to make their homework and provides additional exercises to increase the low education of the public education. Beside this they offered sports, games and music. AMAR also involves the parents of the children in the whole process and try to create a relationship with the community.
Many of the employees of AMAR live or lived in favelas and some lived as a child on the street as well. They know the situation and the surroundings of the children thoroughly. The chances that AMAR has offered them, they want to offer this to the new generation. They made the step to change their lifes and it shows that it is possible for the children of the street to change their way of living. In short, It's really useful work!
